WHAT IS KURT?
KURT IS A TRADITIONAL DRIED DAIRY PRODUCT FROM
CENTRAL ASIA. IT WAS CREATED BY NOMADIC
PEOPLE WHO NEEDED FOOD THAT LASTED LONG
DURING TRAVEL. MADE FROM FERMENTED MILK, KURT
IS SHAPED INTO SMALL BALLS AND DRIED. IT IS RICH IN
NUTRIENTS AND REMAINS AN IMPORTANT PART OF
KAZAKH CULTURE TODAY.

Kurt comes from Central
Asia.
It was made by nomadic
people, including Kazakhs,
Kyrgyz, and Mongols.
They needed food that
could last a long time while
traveling.

WHEN DID KURT APPEAR?
Kurt appeared many centuries ago,
around the Middle Ages (approximately
the 10th–13th centuries).
It was widely used by nomadic tribes in
Central Asia, including Kazakhs.
There is no exact year, but historical
evidence shows that people made dried
dairy products for long journeys during
that time.
Kurt became an important part of
nomadic life and food culture.
