1. Developing Scanning Skills in English Lessons in Primary School
DEVELOPING SCANNINGSKILLS IN ENGLISH LESSONS
IN PRIMARY SCHOOL
Performed by Elizaveta Dvornikova
Scientific supervisor - Kuksa A.V.
2.
• The object of my research is the process ofteaching reading in english to primary school
students.
• The subject of the research is the methodology
for developing scanning skills in english lessons in
primary school, specifically in the 4th grade.
3.
• The main goal of the research is to investigateways to optimize the teaching of scanning and to
develop a methodological toolkit for its formation.
4. Objectives
OBJECTIVES1. to characterize the main types of reading, with a special focus
on scanning.
2. to characterize the main types of reading, with special attention
paid to search (scanning) reading.
3. to study the specific features of developing and controlling text
comprehension skills in primary school children.
5. Objectives
OBJECTIVES• 4. to analyze the approaches to developing
reading skills in english coursebooks for primary
school.
• 5. to develop a set of exercises and a lesson plan
aimed at forming scanning skills in 4th-grade
students.
6. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• Analysis of coursebooks revealed a lack of targeted exercises
for scanning. Existing tasks primarily focus on other reading
types (skimming, detailed reading).
7. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• The developed set of exercises follows the "simple to complex"
principle and aims to address this gap by helping students build
a consistent text-processing algorithm.
8. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• Reading is an active meaning-generating activity that requires
the integration of linguistic, cognitive, and socio-cultural
components.
• Scanning is a strategically important type of reading with a clear
goal of quickly locating specific information. Its development
aligns with the Federal State Educational Standards for metasubject learning outcomes.
9. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• The theoretical foundation for teaching scanning integrates
methodological, psychological, and strategic approaches,
framing reading as a complex cognitive activity.
• For primary school students, a dedicated system of exercises is
essential, considering age-specific features: visual support,
game-based forms, and manageable tasks.
10. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• The lesson plan based on R. Kipling's tale positions the
scanning skill as the primary objective, not a secondary element.
• The lesson plan allows for a differentiated approach, catering to
varying levels of student preparation.
11. Conclusions:
CONCLUSIONS:• The developed materials (exercises and lesson plan) serve as a
ready-made methodological toolkit for effectively forming scanning
skills in the 4th grade.

14. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 1. Prediction by Title & Pictures
• Task: Look at the title and the pictures.
What/who do you think the text is about? Discuss your ideas with a part
ner.
• Example: Title: "A Trip to the Zoo". *"Look at the picture of the elep
hant and giraffe. What animals do you think we will read about?
Name 3-5 animals."*
15. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 2. Activating Vocabulary & Setting the Goal
• Task: Here are some key words: lion, cage, feeding time, zoo keeper.
Scan the text quickly (in 30 seconds) and find which paragraph talks ab
out feeding time. Just look for the words!
• Example: "Your mission is to find one specific fact in the text. Read to f
ind the answer: What time does the zoo close on Sunday? Don't read e
verything, just look for numbers and the word 'Sunday'."
16. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• II. While-Reading (During Reading)
• 1. Fact Finding Race (Прямой поиск фактов)
• Task: Scan the text and find all the numbers (ages, times, amounts). W
rite them down.
• Example: Text "My School Day". "Scan the text. Find and write: 1)
What time does school start? 2) How many lessons does Peter have? 3)
What is the number of his classroom?"
17. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 2. True or False? (Верно/Неверно)
• Task: Read these statements. Scan the text to check if they are True
(T) or False (F).
• Example:
• The story takes place in winter. (T/F)
• The main character has a brother. (T/F)
• They eat pizza for dinner. (T/F)
18. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 3. Word/Phrase Hunt
• Task: Find the sentence in the text that means the same as this one: "
The weather was very good and sunny."
• Example: "Your clue is:
'good and sunny'. Scan the text quickly to find a phrase with a similar
meaning (e.g., 'The day was beautiful'). Underline it."
19. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISESIII. Post-Reading (After Reading)
1. Complete the Table/Chart
Task: You found some facts. Now, complete the table with information
from the text.
Example: Topic: "Animals in the Zoo"
Animal
Lion
Penguin
"Scan the text again to fill in the missing d
etails quickly."
Colour

20. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 2. Create a Mini-Dialogue
• Task: With a partner, prepare a short interview. Use the facts you found.
One is a reporter, the other is the zoo keeper.
• Example:
• Reporter: "What time do you feed the lions?"
• Zoo keeper: (Using info from text) "At 3 o'clock."
• Reporter: "How many elephants do you have?"
• Zoo keeper: (Using info from text) "We have two."
21. Examples of exercises
EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES• 3. Two-Level Homework
• Task (Level 1 – Mandatory):
Write 3 sentences about the main character using the facts you found (e.
g., "His name is Tom. He has a dog. He likes football.").
• Task (Level 2 – Creative):
Draw a comic strip with 2 pictures about the funniest fact you found in
the text. Write one sentence for each picture.
22. Lesson plan
LESSON PLAN• 1. Think before you read. Have you ever seen a camel? People
call it 'the ship of the desert. Do you know why? What other
animals can you meet in this story? Read and check.
• 2. Sound practice. Read these words with the [g] sound: ago,
angry, again, great. Read these words with the [d] sound: just,
magic, djinn.
23.
• 3. Show what you know. Answer the questions.• 1. Where did the Camel live?
• 2. Why did he live in the Desert?
• 3. What did the Camel always say?
• 4. Which Animals came to the Camel?
• 5. What made the Animals very angry?
• 6. Whom did the Animals meet in the Desert?
• 7. What did the Djinn do?
24.
• 5. Match the opposites and complete the table.• __1. silly __2. angry 74 __3. lazy __4. beginning __5. day __6.
always
• a. night b. hard-working c. never d. clever e. end f. Kind
• 6. Find out more about! Odd one out. horse, ox, camel, djinn.
bad, lazy, good, angry. want, when, work, went. If the Djinn
asked you, 'Is it good to be lazy?' What would you say?
25. Perspectives
PERSPECTIVES• As prospects for further research, we see the adaptation
of scanning strategies for working with digital texts and
online resources suitable for children, as well as the
development of diagnostic tools to track the dynamics of
skill development.
