1940S – MID 1950SThe First Generation
The first generation existed mainly from the 1940s to the middle of the
1950s. These computers used vacuum tubes to process information.
They were extremely large, expensive and unreliable. They also used a
lot of electricity and produced a great deal of heat.
One famous example was ENIAC. It occupied a large room and
weighed about thirty tons. The first-generation computers were
programmed using machine language, which was very difficult for
people to understand.

The Second GenerationMID 1950S – 1960S
The second generation appeared in the middle of the 1950s and
continued into the 1960s. Vacuum tubes were replaced by transistors.
Transistors were much smaller, faster and more reliable than vacuum
tubes. Computers of this generation used less electricity and produced
less heat. They were also easier to maintain.
During this period, programming languages such as FORTRAN and
COBOL were developed. These languages made programming more
convenient and accessible.

THE FIFTH GENERATIONThe Future
The fifth generation of computers is connected with artificial intelligence and
