Tongue cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that
starts in the thin layer of skin and muscle that make
up the tongue.

Established
causes of tongue
vancer include:
Tobacco use
(cigarettes, cigars,
pipes, smokeless
forms)
Heavy alcohol use
Human
papillomavirus (HPV)
infection
The risk increases dramatically when tobacco and alcohol are used together.

Tongue cancer is often found durind
a routine dental exam. If something
looks abnormal, doctor may perform:
Biopsy tissue
sample
examined
under a
microscope.
Endoscopy a small
scope to
examine the
throat.
CT scan or
MRI detailed
images of the
body.
PET/CT
scan detects
cancer using
radioactive
dyes.

Treatment:
Prevention:
1. Surgery - most
common (removes
tumor)
1. Quit smoking and
avoid all tobacco
products
2. Radiation therapy x-rays kills cancer cells
2. Limit or avoid
alcohol
3. Chemotherapy,
targeted therapy,
immunotherapy systemic treatments
3. Get the HVP vaccine
4. Have regulat dental
exams and perform
mounthly self-checks
