*Mangystau Region, is a region of Kazakhstan.
Its capital is Aktau, which has a population of
154,500 (2004 census); the entire Mangystau
Region has a population of 373,400.

7. Climate

*The region has a wide variety
of climate conditions. North
Mangystau is cold in winter
due to the Ustyurt Plateau,
the location of the plateau
being mainly above sea level.
On the whole, the climate is
continental with cold winters
and mild summers. The
average temperature is
−3 °C (27 °F) in January and
+26 °C (79 °F) in July.

*Mangystau oblast is rich in
petroleum and natural gas,
especially in the Mangyshlak oil
and gas region of Mangyshlak
Peninsula. Mangyshlak
Peninsula also contains deposits
of phosphorites and coquina. The
desert climate of Mangystau
region is continental and
extremely dry, permitting
virtually no crop farming and
only limited raising of sheep,
camels, and horses.

9. Sightseeing Aktau

The Caspian Sea is
stretched from north
to south to 1200km; the
medium width is 320km,
the length of the shore
line is about 7000km
(6000km of which in the
territory of Russia and
other countries).

10. Beket Ata

Some 285km east of
Aktau, Beket-Ata is an
important and extremely
popular place of
pilgrimage for those
wishing to visit the
underground mosque
and final resting place of
Sufi mystic and teacher,
Beket-Ata (1750–1813).
The mosque is near the
bottom of a picturesque
desert canyon and the
journey to Beket-Ata
involves traversing some
spectacular steppe and
desert scenery.
