An explosion which killed the driver of a car in western Berlin this morning was caused by a bomb, police said.

A wide area of Charlottenburg was
sealed off by emergency services for
several hours while checks were made
for further devices in and around the
shattered Volkswagen Passat.

Witnesses
described how their
floors shook when
the blast happened
shortly before 8am.

Police said that the unidentified male
driver quickly succumbed to his
injuries after the explosion which
caused the car to somersault while
being driven along Bismarckstrasse.
