2. General approaches to the improvement of nuclear weapons
The improvement of nuclear weapons isdetermined, on the one hand, by the level of
scientific and technological progress achieved in
the development of nuclear weapons and their
delivery vehicles, and, on the other hand, by the
degree of adequacy of these achievements to the
requirements of military-technical and militarypolitical tasks.
3. Properties of nuclear weapons
Unlike conventional weapons, it has adestructive effect due to nuclear, rather than
mechanical or chemical energy. In terms of the
destructive power of a blast wave alone, one
nuclear weapon unit can surpass thousands of
conventional bombs and artillery shells. In
addition, a nuclear explosion has a destructive
thermal and radiation effect on all living things,
sometimes over large areas.
4.
Nuclear weapons are munitions, the destructionand destruction of which is based on the use of the
energy of the atomic nucleus. It is the most
powerful and dangerous type of weapons of mass
destruction, threatening all of humanity with
unprecedented destruction and the destruction of
millions of people. For the first time, nuclear
weapons were used by the American army in Japan:
on August 6, 1945, a nuclear bomb was dropped on
the city of Hiroshima, and three days later - on the
city of Nagasaki. As a result of the explosions,
these cities were almost completely destroyed.
5. Nuclear war
Nuclear war is a hypothetical military conflictbetween states or military-political blocs with
nuclear or thermonuclear weapons. In such a
war, the main means of destruction is nuclear
weapons.
In the second half of the 20th century, it was
considered one of the most likely options for
the development of the Cold War.
6.
On this basis, it follows that nuclear weaponsact as a factor of deterrence and
intimidation. Given the accumulated
stockpiles of nuclear weapons and their
destructive power, experts believe that a world
war with the use of nuclear weapons would
mean the death of hundreds of millions of
people, turning all the achievements of world
civilization and culture into ruins.

A number of treaties on nuclear testing and nuclear
disarmament have been signed.
The problem today is the safe operation of nuclear
power plants. After all, the most common failure to
comply with safety engineering can lead to the same
consequences as a nuclear war.
