5. Subcultures

Now I would like to tell you about other youth movement – subcultures. A subculture is a group of
people within a culture that differentiates itself from the parent culture to which it belongs, often
maintaining some of its founding principles. Subcultures develop their own norms and values
regarding cultural and political matters. Subcultures are part of society while keeping their specific
characteristics intact.

6. The Hippies

A hippie is a member of
the counterculture of the
1960s, originally a youth
movement that began in the
United States during the mid1960s and spread to other
countries around the world.
Hippies despise established
concepts, criticize the values
of the middle class and act as a
radical opposition to the use of
nuclear weapons. The musical
culture of hippies was a
mixture of rock, folk, blues and
psychedelic rock. It is possible
now to meet representatives of
this subculture in Russia.

7. The Goths

The goth subculture is
a subculture that began
in England during the early 1980s,
where it developed from the
audience of gothic rock, an
offshoot of the post-punk genre.
The name, goth subculture, derived
directly from the music genre. The
goth subculture has associated
tastes in music, aesthetics, and
fashion. The music preferred by the
goth subculture includes a number
of different styles, e.g. gothic
rock, death rock, post-punk, cold
wave, dark wave, and ethereal
wave. The subculture continues to
draw interest from a large audience
decades after its emergence.

8. Punks

The punk subculture includes
a diverse array
of ideologies, fashion, and
other forms of
expression, visual art,
dance, literature and film. It is
largely characterised by antiestablishment views and the
promotion of individual
freedom, and is centred on a
loud, aggressive genre of rock
music called punk rock. Punk
politics cover the entire
political spectrum. Common
punk ethos includes nonconformity, antiauthoritarianism, anticorporatism, a do-it-yourself
ethic, anti-consumerist, anticonservative, anti-corporate
greed, direct action and not
"selling out".

9.

The main characteristic of the punk
subculture is reduced to the protest.
First and foremost, this protest was
cultural: the punks were opposed to
Commerce on the stage, sought to
hooliganism and drive. In the second
place, it was is a social protest. Punks
ignore the standard rules of aesthetics,
ethics, morals. Punks don't take the
mass. They protest against mass
culture, production, overproduction.
They show dissatisfaction and clothing
– they are distinguished by a colorful
and unique hairstyles, ragged clothes,
lots of chains. The main value from the
point of view of punk – freedom. It can
not be limited, and everyone can do as
he sees fit. What punks do almost
anything without limitation.
