The University is at the heart of the city of Edinburgh It isone of the largest universities in the UK. It was founded
due to the funds provided by Bishop Robert Reid on his
deathbed in 1558. After many years, the University of
Edinburgh was granted its Royal Charter by James VI in
1582. Soon after, the university became the European
Enlightenment centre in the 18th century. The University
of Edinburgh is one of the world's top universities,
consistently ranked in the world top 50 and placed 16th
in the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

FacultiesThe University of Edinburgh is arranged
into three academic colleges. These
are the colleges of Humanities and
Social Science; Science and
Engineering; and Medicine and
Veterinary Medicine. Each college is
composed of different schools.

There are such schools as : BiologicalSciences, School of Business School
Chemistry, School of Divinity, School of
Economics, School of Edinburgh
College of Art Edinburgh Medical
School Education, The Moray House
School of Engineering, School of
GeoSciences, School of Health in
Social Science.

The university provides its students withall academic, residential and social
needs. To address a student's health
needs, the university offers a health
centre which provides antenatal,
contraceptive, psychiatric, and
physiotherapeutic services.

Student FacilitiesOver 30 libraries, including 20
departmental libraries offering tailored
and in-depth specialist resources. 600,000
electronic books and 20,000 electronic
journals, which can be accessed
remotely at any time.

University graduatesAlumni of the university include some of the
major figures of modern history, including
the physicist James Clerk Maxwell, naturalist
Charles Darwin, philosopher David Hume,
mathematician Thomas Bayes, surgeon
Joseph Lister, signatories of the American
declaration of independence John
Witherspoon and Benjamin Rush, inventor
Alexander Graham Bell, first president of
Tanzania Julius Nyerere, and a host of
famous authors such as Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.M. Barrie
and Sir Walter Scott.
