Illinois is a state in the Midwest. The population
of "Land of Lincoln" (this is the official nickname
of the state) is just under 13 million people, the
fifth largest in the United States.

The name comes from an Indian tribe living on
this land in the 19th century.
The state is also called the state of cacti, because
there are a lot of these plants.

On the white background of the flag of Illinois is the
state seal, which depicts a bald eagle perched on a
stone. In its beak, the bird holds a ribbon with the
state motto: "Sovereign State, Union of Nations."

There are more than 500 rivers in the state
(the largest is Illinois), connected by a
navigable canal to Lake Michigan and 950
lakes.

There are 8 cities in the state of Illinois. The largest
city in the state is Chicago, and the third largest city
in the United States of America. Located on the
Sangamon River, the city of Springfield is not only the
state capital, but also the birthplace of the sixteenth
American president, Abraham Lincoln.

Almost all of Illinois is hilly plains, elevations rise
only in the northwest. There are more forests in
the south of the state, it is here that one of the
largest protected forests in the United States is
located - the Shawnee National Forest.
