Carbohydrates and lipids

1.

Carbohydrates and lipids

2.

Lesson objectives
To learn biological functions of
carbohydrates and lipids

3.

Why do we need carbohydrates and
lipids?

4.

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are polymers.
Composed of C, H,O.
General formula Cn(H2O)m
Carbohydrates perform many functions in living things.

5.

Carbohydrates are primary energy
source. Ex: glucose.

6.

Carbohydrates store energy in form of
starch in plants and glycogen in animals.

7.

Carbohydrates perform structural
function. For example chitin is a
carbohydrate that makes up exoskeleton
of arthropods and cell wall of fungi.

8.

Cellulose also perform structural
function. It makes up cell wall of plant cell.

9.

Sucrose is a table sugar.

10.

LIPIDS
Lipids are not polymers.
They are insoluble in water, but soluble in
alcohol
Lipids also perform many functions.

11.

Lipids perform structural function.
Phospholipids make up the cell
membrane.

12.

Wax is raw material of honeycombs.

13.

Leaves are covered by wax to prevent
water loss.

14.

Lipids are secondary source of energy.
Fats in animals and oils in plants are
energy storage.

15.

Fat keeps the body warmth. Fat under the
skin stores body temperature.
