• Today we are going to talk about Zhang Yiming, a
Chinese internet entrepreneur who founded
ByteDance in 2012 and developed the news
aggregator (Toutiao and video sharing platform
TikTok), formerly known as Musical.ly.

TikTok
• Is a Chinese social media application for
creating and distributing video files and
online broadcasts. The service was
launched in September 2016 by the
Chinese company ByteDance.
• It is also the most popular platform for
short videos in Asia, which has spread to
other parts of the world and is rapidly
gaining popularity to this day.

• In June 2018, TikTok reached 500 million monthly users
worldwide and 150 million active daily users in China. It
became the most downloaded app in the world on
Apple's App Store in the first half of 2018 with
approximately 104 million downloads, surpassing the
records of PUBG Mobile, YouTube, WhatsApp and
Instagram during this period.
• And also in February 2020, TikTok announced a "family
safety mode" so that parents could control their
children's digital well-being. There is an option to
manage screen time, a restricted mode, and the ability
to limit direct messages.
• The app has sparked a number of viral trends, and it has
created new online celebrities in different parts of the
world.
• There are also a number of trends on TikTok, including
memes, lip-synced songs and comedy. One of the app's
features is "duets", which allows users to add their own
video to an existing one that contains original audio.
This feature has led to the emergence of most trends.

Zhang Yiming (Чжан Їмін)
• Zhang was born on 1 April 1983 in Lunyan, Fujian, China. In 2001, he entered
Nankai University in Tianjin, where he studied microelectronics and then
switched to software development, and graduated in 2005.
• In February 2006, Zhang became the fifth employee and first engineer of the
Kuxun travel website, and a year later he was promoted to CTO.
• In 2008, Zhang left Kuxun to work at Microsoft, but felt stifled by its corporate
rules. He soon left Microsoft to join a startup called Fanfou, which eventually
failed.In 2009, when Expedia was about to acquire Kuxun, Zhang took over
Kuxun's search business and founded 99fang.com, his first company, ByteDance.
