The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House
of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the
Parliament of the United Kingdom.
Commonly known as the
Houses of Parliament
after its occupants, the
Palace lies on the north
bank of the River
Thames in the City of
Westminster, in central
London.

This building arose in 1840 - 1860 years on the site of the
palace burned down in 1834.
From the medieval
palace remained the
Westminster Reception
Hall (1097), where the
Westminster Courts
met, and the Tower of
Treasures

The Palace of Westminster features three main towers. Of these, the
largest and tallest is 98.5-metre Victoria Tower, which occupies the southwestern corner of the Palace.

Elizabeth. It is only slightly inferior to
the Victoria Tower in height (96
meters), but much thinner. It houses the
Great Clock of Westminster, created in
1859.

occupies an area of 1800
square meters.
Its height is 28 meters.

The palace has 1100 rooms, 100 stairs and 5 kilometers of corridors. Of
the palace towers, the most famous is the Elisabeth Clock Tower (Big
Ben), the symbol of Great Britain. The Victoria Tower is two meters
taller, its height is 98.45 meters (323 feet). In 1987, the palace and the
nearby St. Margaret Church (1486-1523) were included in the UNESCO
World Heritage List.
