ABOUT THISThanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the fourth
Thursday of November. It is sometimes called American Thanksgiving to distinguish it
from the Canadian holiday of the same name and related celebrations in other regions.
It originated as a day of thanksgiving and harvest festival, with the theme of the
holiday revolving around giving thanks and the centerpiece of Thanksgiving
celebrations remaining a Thanksgiving dinner.

HISTORYSetting aside time to give thanks for one's
blessings, along with holding feasts to celebrate a
harvest, are both practices that long predate the
European settlement of North America. The
Puritans observed days of fasting to pray for
God's favour, as well as days of thanksgiving to
thank God for a bountiful harvest, victory and
other joyous occasions. Documented
thanksgiving services in territory currently
belonging to the United States were conducted in
the 16th century by Spaniards and the French.
These days of thanksgiving were celebrated
through church services and feasting.

DEBATE OVER THE FIRST THANKSGIVINGAccording to historian James Baker, debates over where any "first Thanksgiving"
took place on modern American territory are a "tempest in a beanpot". Jeremy
Bang opines that, "Local boosters in Virginia, Florida, and Texas promote their own
colonists, who (like many people getting off a boat) gave thanks for setting foot
again on dry land." Baker claims, "the American holiday's true origin was the New
England Calvinist Thanksgiving. Never coupled with a Sabbath meeting, the Puritan
observances were special days set aside during the week for thanksgiving and
praise in response to God's providence."
