Water pollution inthe world's oceans
is a global problem
that is
unfortunately not
being addressed.

• Rivers• Cali River (Colombia). Industrial and domestic
wastewater, which enters the riverbed without
prior treatment, is largely to blame. Local
studies have revealed that in some sections of
the river, the concentration of pollutants,
including pesticides, exceeds the maximum
permissible values by dozens of times.
• The Yellow River (China). More than a third of
Caption
the river is unsuitable for human use, even in
agriculture. Every year, approximately 4,290
tons of industrial waste and sewage are
discharged into the river.
• The Mississippi River (USA). Throughout its
journey from north to south, the river is filled
with toxic waste and sewage.

Plastic pollution. Plastic waste and its small fragmentsdo not decompose, clogging water bodies and the
bottom. Animals confuse small pieces of plastic with
food, ingesting them, or become entangled in large
pieces. This causes injuries, digestive problems, and
often leads to death.
Oil spills. They have a toxic effect on marine life. For
example:
For birds, oil clings to feathers, preventing them from
taking off, and reduces the body's insulation.
For marine mammals, this includes the contamination
of their fur with hydrocarbons, which can lead to a loss
of their ability to retain heat and prevent their bodies
from coming into contact with water.
For fish, the negative effects are caused by the
consumption of contaminated food and water, as well
as the exposure of their eggs to hydrocarbons.
Noise pollution can interfere with the ability of
organisms to use sound, causing stress that can
negatively impact their health, behavior, physiology,
reproduction, and even lead to their death.
