2. ABOUT HOLIDAYS

New Year in Scotland is
always a very funny,
bright, loud and joyful
holiday.
Instead Scottish Christmas
is a traditional quite family
celebration, when the
whole family gets together.

3. ABOUT HOLIDAYS

People celebrate the Traditional
Scottish Christmas on the 25th of
December. The day before is
called Christmas Eve, and the
day after is called Boxing Day.
These are the working days.
January the 1st and the 2nd are
national holidays in Scotland
when everybody celebrates the
New Year.

4. SCOTTISH TRADITIONS

On Christmas Eve people first visit the
churches. After that they have a festive table
at home. There’s always a lot of food at
Christmas Dinner as there’s a tradition to feed
everybody who comes in.
The first visitor to a home on Christmas Day is
called the First Footer. This person must be a
man with dark hair and he has to bring
special gifts: a coal (the wish of comfort in the
house), a slice of bread and a silver coin ( the
wish of wealth) and a green sprig (the wish
of good health).

5. SCOTTISH TRADITIONS

In Scotland New Year is called
HOGMANAY. It’s a very merry
celebration with dances, songs,
different fireworks and fire festivals.
It’s the ancient custom of using the fire
to drive away evil spirits as a way to
purge the old year.

6. CHRISTMAS DINNER

The Scots love good festive meals.
Therefore, the traditional festive
table is always rich in various dishes
and treats. For example, the
traditional Christmas treats are
cakes with dried fruits, meat dishes,
sweet spotted apples, oatcakes and
Christmas bread.
