4. Wall Street
Read about some famous places of New York CityWall Street
No street has been more important to a city than Wall
Street has been to New York. Wall Street is now the city's
financial heart. And the New York Stock Exchange is also
situated here.
The New York Stock exchange began as a simple area
around an apple tree which grew at 68 Wall Street. It was
here, in 1792, that 24 traders agreed to deal only with each
other.
October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday was the collapse of the New York stock
markets and this soon led to The Great Depression.
Throughout the years, the advance of technology has produced many
changes at the stock exchange. Over 200 million shares are traded each day
for more than 2,000 companies.
The massive bronze statue of a bull, the symbol of Wall Street, has long
been a mascot for traders on Wall Street.

6. Manhattan
Manhattan is an island just 13 mileslong and 2 miles wide. It is the
center of American finance,
advertising, art, theater, publishing,
fashion - and much more.
Manhattan is divided into the East Side and the West Side. The dividing
line is Fifth Avenue. So, for example , East 47th Street begins at Fifth
Avenue, as does West 47th Street.
Manhattan is also divided into Lower (Downtown), Midtown and Upper
(Up-town) Manhattan. Lower Manhattan refers to street numbers below
14th Street and Central Park, and Upper Manhattan to the northern
part of the island.
