CONDITIONALS
Conditional sentences have two parts:
the if-clause and the main clause.

TYPE 0
If+present simple, present simple
• Scientific Facts If you heat water to 1000 Celsius, it boils.
• General Truths If you drop a book, it falls.
• Rules If you take drugs, don’t drive.
• Obvious Causes and Effects If you disconnect the battery,
the computer turns off.
• Routine Molly uses glasses when she types.
• !!! In type 0 you can always replace IF on WHEN
Water and oil do not mix if you combine them. = Water and oil do not
mix when you combine them.

TYPE 1
If- clause+ pr. simple, will+V
• Talk about things that are likely to happen in
future
If the weather is nice, we’ll go for a walk.
If you see Greg, ask him to ring me up.

TYPE 2
If-clause+ Past Simple, would+ v
• Unreal actions in present (it cannot be true)
If the weather were rainy, John would stay at home. (But it is sunny).
If I were very rich, I would buy what I want. But I'm not so rich.
If people had wings, they could fly.

If-clause+ Past perfect, Would + Present
perfect
• Unreal past
If we had left earlier, we would have caught a train
If he had studied better, he would have got a job.
If I hadn't called you, you wouldn't have known the news.
