The history of the creation of the new year
in the USSR
It was in Soviet times that
the New Year became a
truly national holiday. The
celebration of the New Year
was officially recognized on
January 1, 1948, and the
authorities made this day a
weekend for everyone. And
in the 30s, the authorities
forbade identifying the
Christmas tree, gifts and
Santa Claus with religious
symbols.

The history of the creation of the new
year in Russia
Preparations for the main
holiday of the year in Russia
begin already from the
beginning of winter. Decorated
Christmas trees, light
installations, ice sculptures,
snowmen and figures of Santa
Claus, the Snow Maiden and the
symbol of the coming year
according to the Eastern
calendar appear on the streets
of cities. Festive performances
are held in the central squares.

Traditions
Since the 1970s, there has been a
tradition that has become an annual one to listen to the solemn address of the
head of state to the people and make
wishes under the chimes.
Traditionally, the celebration on
December 31 begins at about 23 o'clock.
At dinner, there is usually a toast to the
passing year, they remember all the
happy events that it brought.
Traditionally, children's matinees are
organized, where children take part in a
masquerade, play, sing songs and dance
around the Christmas tree.

New Year's entertainment
The main
entertainment for
ordinary people was
sledding and ice
slides. Since the
reign of Peter the
Great, the custom of
setting off fireworks
has become
popular.
"One of the New
Year's traditions in
many countries has
become the gift of
greeting cards.

Symbols and attributes
There are many objects
and images that are
associated with the main
winter celebration. But the
most popular ones are an
elegant Christmas tree,
kind Grandfather frost and
his granddaughter Crystal
Maiden, a festive table
with treats. Also,
according to the Chinese
calendar, each year
symbolizes a totemic
animal.

New Year's Table
Even our ancestors on New Year's
Eve set a generous meal on the
table. Today, along with traditional
dishes — salads and sandwiches
with caviar, champagne and
tangerines, it is customary to set the
table taking into account the eastern
horoscope and be sure to take into
account what the symbol of the year
will like. So, the coming year 2024
according to the Chinese calendar
will be the year of the Cat. To
appease these totemic animals,
there must be dishes of poultry, fish
and seafood on the table.

Old New Year
In Russia, on the night of
January 13-14, the custom of
celebrating the Old New Year
was established. It was first
celebrated on January 14,
1919.In 1918, the authorities
decided to follow the example
of progressive countries and
issued a decree on a new
chronology — instead of the
Julian calendar, the Gregorian
chronology became official.
And since the 20th century, the
difference between the two
calendars is 13 days.
