Jwst or james webb space telescope

1.

JWST
OR
JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE

2.

This is a 3d model of an orbital
infrared observatory
Fact: Its mirror is
segmented with a total
diameter of almost 7
meters

3.

HISTORY OF NAME AND STRUCTURE
JWST is the largest space telescope with the largest mirror ever launched
by mankind. It was originally called the “Next-generation space
telescope” (NGST). In 2002, it was renamed in honor of NASA’s second
director, James Webb, who headed the agency from 1961 to 1968 during
the Apollo program. It was decided to make the primary mirror of the
telescope not solid, but from foldable segments that would be opened in
orbit, since the diameter of the primary mirror would not allow it to be
placed in the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. The primary mirror of the James
Webb telescope consists of 18 hexagonal segments made of gold-plated
beryllium

4.

COMPARISON WITH HUBBLE
Observes in a lower frequency
range, from long-wave visible
light (red) to mid-infrared
Observes in the nearultraviolet, visible, and nearinfrared spectra

5.

EXPLANATION
This allows it to observe the most distant objects in the Universe,
high-redshift objects (the first galaxies and stars in the Universe)
that are too old, faint and distant for the Hubble telescope

PLANS
On June 15, 2017, NASA and ESA published a list of the telescope’s first targets,
including over 2,100 observations. These included planets and small bodies of
the Solar System, exoplanets and protoplanetary disks, galaxies and clusters of
galaxies, as well as quasars.
On March 30, 2021, NASA announced the final list of primary targets for
observations that will start 6 months after the launch of the telescope. A total
of 286 were selected from more than one thousand applications in seven main
areas of astronomy, which in total will take about six thousand hours of
telescope observing time, which is about two-thirds of the total time allocated
within the first observation cycle
