The Mystery of the Mary Celeste
In December 1872, the British ship Dei Gratia spotted another vessel, the Mary Celeste, drifting aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean. Captain Morehouse,
knowing the Mary Celeste's captain, Benjamin Briggs, became concerned. He sent a boarding party to investigate.
To their astonishment, they found the ship in perfect seaworthy condition. There was a six-month supply of food and water, and the crew's
personal belongings were untouched. The cargo of industrial alcohol was largely intact. However, the lifeboat was missing, and the entire crew of
ten people, including the captain's wife and young daughter, had vanished without a trace. The last log entry was dated ten days earlier and gave
no indication of trouble. The ship's navigational instruments and papers were gone.
The mystery of what happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the sea. Theories range from
pirate attacks and sea monsters to more plausible explanations like a mutiny, a waterspout, or a panic caused by the fumes from the alcohol
cargo. None of these theories, however, fully explains all the facts.
